Tees Maar Khan in Pakistan from December 31st

Akshay Kumar Katrina Kaif starrer Tees Maar Khan premiered at the Atrium Cinemas, Karachi on Christmas day. Tees Maar Khan will be opened for public viewing from December 31st. Bollywood movies have a mass following in Pakistan, where they faced an official ban from 1965 to 2008.

During this period, pirated tapes and CDs of Bollywood movies were the only source of Indian movies for Pakistani fans. In 2008, the government eased its ban and allowed selected Bollywood movies to be screened.

India's other neighbour to the east, Bangladesh, had a ban on Bollywood movies till April this year. The ban was lifted after Bangladesh renewed diplomatic ties with India. The ban of Bollywood movies in Pakistan and Bangladesh was not just politically motivated; the move was also to protect the smaller movie industries of the countries, which do not stand a chance against the might of Bollywood.

Pakistani and Bangladeshi film makers are constantly making representations to their governments to reintroduce the ban. While film makers are resentful of Bollywood movies, cinema owners are pro-Bollywood, as their revenues have increased after screening Bollywood movies.
